February 23 – 24, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (Saturday early admission for members – 9:00am)
The 38th Annual Plant & Garden Festival will take on new dimensions this year thanks to an arts grant from the Women’s Exchange. This year the two-day festival features an array of activities, information, and, yes, plants for enthusiasts from neophytes to master gardeners. Selby Gardens will be decorated with colorful displays from premier plant & gardening retailers from across Florida! Shop for rare collections, exotic species, herbs, houseplants, gardening supplies, and more. Selby horticulturists, master gardeners from Sarasota County Extension Service, and various plant society representatives will offer gardening advice and demonstrations over the weekend. Other demonstrations include the Asian style art of Sumi-e painting by the Sarasota Chapter of the Sumi-e Society in the Cooley Theater. Kids can also take part in the gardening fun with activities and games in the Kids’ Corner.
A generous grant from The Woman’s Exchange enabled Selby Gardens to produce the visual and performing arts selections for this year’s festival which are being presented as “The Art of Plants.” The new programming will include plant-themed “pop up” contemporary dance performances by Moving Ethos dance troupe as well as garden-inspired dance, music and theater performances. In partnership with Ikebana National Sarasota Chapter and the Sho Fu Bonsai Society, Selby Gardens will display Ikebana and Bonsai exhibits in the Great Room by the Bay. The 2013 Plant & Garden Festival will also feature live jazz music by Nu Jazz and South County Jazz Society and Broadway show tunes. Favorite outdoor grilling fare created especially for Plant and Garden Fest will be available for purchase.
