The Marie Selby Gardens Associates presented a check for $20,000 to Selby Gardens Trustees and CEO Tom Buchter at their Annual Meeting on Monday, May 16, 2011. Under the leadership of outgoing Associates President Sue Scully, the organization has raised and contributed a total of $47,755 to Selby Gardens over the past two years.
Nora Johnson, Chairman of the Gardens’ Board of Trustees, thanked the Associates for becoming one of the first (and to date, the largest) donor to the Gardens’ new donor society, The Chairman’s Circle: “When we asked the Associates to become founding members of The Chairman’s Circle, they didn’t hesitate—and they didn’t hesitate to come in at the highest level. Their dedication and passion for this incredible place are inspiring.”
The contribution capped the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Associates’ founding. The group was formed in 1980 by volunteers who wanted to bring attention to Sarasota’s then-new botanical garden. Over the past 30 years, the Associates have grown to more than 100 members who volunteer, present programs, and hold fundraisers to support botanical research, horticulture, education, and conservation. The mission of the Marie Selby Gardens Associates is “to further the understanding and appreciation of plant life, with emphasis on epiphytes, and to provide enjoyment to all who visit the Gardens.”
