DESCRIPTION:In her travels around the world, Bertha Palmer took note of emerging styles in art, and began collecting the work of the French impressionists. Her favorite appears to be Claude Monet, as she purchased 90 of his paintings. She visited Giverny on her trips to France, and rumor has it she met and conversed with the artist. She kept many of the paintings and sold others – introducing a wider audience to the French Impressionist’s work. Several of the Monet paintings that graced her Osprey home “The Oaks” were later bequeathed to the Art Institute of Chicago, while other works are still cherished by family members.
