Archaeology Days: Celebrating a Window to the Past
March is Florida Archaeology Month, so come and connect with regional history at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ Historic Spanish Point campus on March 2-3. Our focus is ancient history, the heritage of ancestral Seminole people represented by the ancient monuments and architecture preserved and protected by Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. On either day, join Director of Public Archaeology Uzi Baram for information on the archaeology at Historic Spanish Point, demonstrations of archaeological technologies, and family-friendly activities that will show how the campus is a window to the past. Highlight of the days is Window to the Past, an exhibit in the Shell Ridge Mound showing thousands of years of ancient history.
Every March, Florida celebrates its robust archaeological heritage with statewide programs and events designed to encourage Floridians and visitors to learn more about the archaeology and history of the state, and to preserve these important parts of Florida’s rich cultural heritage.
The Window to the Past Exhibit at Historic Spanish Point campus of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is the central attraction for Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ Florida Archaeology Month, for learning the ancient history of the region and its relevance for our present and future.
Uzi Baram will be at Window to the Past to share information on the ancient remains and on the people who built and lived on and with the Shell Ridge. The Florida Public Archaeology Network West Central Region and New College of Florida undergraduates will demonstrate archaeological technologies that aid in revealing the daily life of the ancient people. Join us for concise presentations on the ancient remains, hear about the heroes of historic preservation who saved the mounds, see replicas of ancient, innovative technology, use an atlatl – a tool used for hunting, and braid Spanish Moss – sustainable materials for cords and ropes.
