Selby Gardens Appoints Bates VP of External Relations

SARASOTA, Fla., Sept. 20, 2018 – Marie Selby Botanical Gardens has appointed a new Vice President of External Relations.

Lynn Hobeck-Bates, APR, CPRC, will assume the leadership role beginning Oct. 4. Bates will be responsible for marketing and public relations, membership and guest relations for the botanical garden.

Lynn’s deep connections to our community, along with her expansive public relations background will help further connect Selby Gardens with both our neighbors and audiences worldwide,” said Wendy Deming, Chief Operating Officer for Selby Gardens. “We are excited to have her join the team.”

Bates most recently served as Communications/PR Manager with Visit Sarasota County, the official tourism marketing agency for the area. She was also chair of the Global Communications committee for VISIT FLORIDA, the statewide tourism agency. Bates is active with the Florida Public Relations Association, Junior League of Sarasota and was named a Tampa Bay Business Journal’s Up & Comers Finalist in 2017. She holds advanced certifications in communications and public relations and she earned her B.S. in Psychology from James Madison University and a M.Ed. from Vanderbilt University.

Selby Gardens has marked significant growth in the last several years with double-digit percentage increases in admission, membership, donations and event and retail revenue. As the only botanical garden in the world dedicated to the study of epiphytes, or air plants such as orchids, bromeliads, gesneriads and ferns, the research institution connects more than 200,000 visitors a year with nature to achieve its mission of furthering an understanding and appreciation of plants.
