Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ Director of Education & Visitor Engagement was recently named to the review panel for youth access grants overseen by the Smithsonian Institution and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Jeannie Perales will visit Washington D.C. in late September to finalize panel recommendations for the Institution’s Office of the Assistant Secretary for Education and Access (ASEA). This is the sixth year the Institution has offered the Youth Access Grants program, which supports the efforts of Smithsonian educators and their collaborators who use innovative technology to reach underserved youth and educators working in under-resourced communities. A $30 million endowment from the Gates Foundation supports this program. Perales will evaluate projects that are thought to be ready for replication or scale in multiple communities.
“To have Jeannie selected for this honor speaks highly of her professional acumen, and of the youth outreach programs she oversees that are offered at Selby Gardens,” said Jennifer O. Rominiecki, President and CEO of Selby Gardens.
Perales has been a senior team leader with Selby Gardens for the past six years overseeing youth, adult and community education programs and outreach.
Selby Gardens offers a variety of educational programs each year related to nature and arts from exhibitions, tours and family programs to lectures and classes.
