Event Information

Fall Lunch in the Gardens 2024

Enjoy a delicious lunch in our world-class bayfront setting and a fascinating discussion with Kassia St. Clair, author of The Secret Lives of Color, together with David Berry, Selby Gardens’ Vice President for Visitor Engagement and Chief Museum Curator, and Angel Lara, Vice President for Botanical Horticulture. The conversation will delve into the history of color pigments and dyes, as well as the cultural associations of purple and its many botanical connections. Kassia St. Clair will be signing copies of her book, The Secret Lives of Color, which will be available for sale at the luncheon.

Purple attire is encouraged!
Kassia St. Clair, author of The Secret Lives of Color

Kassia St. Clair is an author and cultural historian who specialises in telling gripping stories about the overlooked and the everyday. She is based in London and is Britain’s best selling historian under 40. Her first book, The Secret Lives of Color, is a top-ten bestseller, was selected as Radio 4′s Book of the Week and has been translated into twenty languages. She writes for the Economist, the TelegraphArchitectural Digest, the Washington Post and Wired about color, culture and design.

The Secret Lives of Color tells the unusual stories of seventy-five fascinating shades, dyes, and hues. In this book, Kassia St. Clair has turned her lifelong obsession with colors and where they come from (whether Van Gogh’s chrome yellow sunflowers or punk’s fluorescent pink) into a unique study of human civilization. Across fashion and politics, art and war, the secret lives of color tell the vivid story of our culture.
