Tom Mirenda has been cultivating plants since his early childhood and has created beauty in botanic garden settings for more than half of his adult life. Originally trained as a marine biologist, Tom began his career in Hawaii studying coral reefs. He then transitioned to horticultural roles with New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanical Garden and Greentree Estate in Long Island; he also served as floor manager of the legendary New York International Orchid Show.
For 17 years Tom was the Orchid Collection Specialist at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC where he cultivated and curated a diverse orchid collection for millions of visitors each year. He is a recognized as a writer, speaker and advocate for orchid conservation around the world. Tom shares this passion at national and international conferences and events, writing for ORCHIDS magazine and the American Orchid Society. He recently co-authored the book titled The Book of Orchids.
Tom recently joined the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens as the Director of Horticulture, Education, and Community Outreach. Living in an “orchid paradise” has given Tom access to a myriad of spectacular orchids of all types and the ability to continue to share the importance of orchid conservation.
